MINNIE
MINNIE
Minnie came to us from another rescue group that did not have the resources to care for her long term medical needs. To say she had a rough start in life is an understatement. At 3 months old her head was literally crushed by a pit-bull. She underwent emergency surgery to fix her jaw which had been broken in three places. Because of this attack, her sinus cavities are not quite right, and she has sinus problems which consist of a constantly runny nose and lots of sneezing (we follow her around with a Kleenex).
As if that wasn't enough, at one year old she almost died due to anemia which was caused by Hemobartonella felis (a blood disease of cats where the gram-negative mycoplasma attaches itself to the cat's red blood cells). When the immune system detects this abnormality, it destroys the blood cells.
Minnie's foster mom came home one night and found Minnie on the floor breathing rapidly, her nose (normally very pink) and gums were white. She rushed Minnie to the emergency vet where Minnie underwent a blood transfusion which saved her life. The next day she was taken to a specialist, and the diagnosis of Hemobartonella Felis was confirmed. We also had an ultra-sound performed, due to an irregular heart beat, and found she had a VERY rare birth defect in her heart that could not be corrected by surgery, but could be controlled by daily medication.
We considered euthanasia, but Minnie was a happy, playful 1 year old, and through all of these medical procedures Minnie was a trooper, never complaining or fussing. One look into her eyes, which sparked with life, and we knew we had to give her every chance to recover. It took months of daily medications and supplements, and lots of visits to the vet to get her red blood cells back to a level that was normal for a cat.
Now you will often find Minnie running around the house; her tail all puffed up, chasing the other cats and attacking any toy that gets in her way. She does, however, tire easily, and when she rests it is usually curled up in a cat bed with another cat or two, happily grooming them and being "big sister".
Minnie will be on daily medications for the rest of her life to keep the Hemobartonella Felis under control (since it is not curable), and to keep her heart from going into left atrium failure. She's very good at taking her pills, especially since she knows that afterwards she will get her favorite treat of a little cheese!
With your sponsorship, this amazing and special cat will always have her daily medications. Minnie has proven over and over again that she has a strong desire to live, and a lot of love to give to everyone! With your help she will continue to thrive and keep the world safe from the evil catnip mice!
